In 1922 in arandas, mexico, don jose maria bañuelos looked out his window at the rolling hills of blue agave. What he saw, amidst the red clay and tall blue agave, was a deer, standing bravely in the center of the field. Something about the prideful, confident beauty of the stag struck a nerve with don jose — it was the perfect symbol for his new recipe for a smooth yet bold, highland tequila. Naturally, that tequila was named cazadores — or, the hunters. After don jose perfected his bold new cazadores tequila, it’s said he hid the recipe in the walls of his house, guarding it as his most prized possession. For 51 years, cazadores remained a family secret, until don jose’s grandson, don felix, decided it was time to share cazadores with the world. In 1973, don felix built the first commercial cazadores distillery, right in the same spot in arandas where don jose first saw a stag in his agave field.
