It was named Cardenal Mendoza in honor of an eminent figure from Spanish history, Cardenal Pedro Gonzalez de Mendoza (1423 - 1495), who lived during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, and played an important role in promoting the 'discovery' of America, interceding with the Monarchs on behalf of Christopher Columbus.
